The summer heat is back and a dip in the pool can be one of the best ways to beat it. Swimming provides a low-impact workout while also calming the mind and relaxing the body. It’s also a fun way to spend time with loved ones, or even enjoy some solo time. But with a shortage of lifeguards, some public pools are only partially open, and the number of licensed private pools in Hong Kong has been reduced to around 1,371. That means that some swimmers will have to find another swimming destination this summer.
According to a report by the Hong Kong Recreation and Sports Professionals General Union, about 20 public pools have informed their swimming clubs that they cannot operate as usual this summer due to staffing issues. Several pools have already closed lanes or facilities reserved for swimming instruction, causing concerns that class cancellations are on the horizon. The HKRSPGU warned that this will affect the development of the city’s sports industry, as well as swimmers and beginners.
