Data sgp is the data set that contains student growth projection (SGP) information for students who have participated in the Star assessment. This data allows educators to identify areas of strength and weakness for students as well as inform classroom instruction. The SGP data can also be used to guide district-wide improvement initiatives.
SGP is a measure of student academic growth in relation to their academic peers. It is calculated by dividing a student’s current score on a state assessment by their academic peer group’s average scale score. The result is then multiplied by 100. This percentage indicates how much the student’s score has changed relative to their peers.
For example, a student who has a current score of 85 on a state assessment would have an SGP of 85 because she has shown more growth than 85 percent of her academic peers. However, a student who has a very low score on a state assessment might have a low SGP because she has not grown as much as her peers.
In addition to providing student growth percentages, the sgpData data set also provides a number of other useful statistics such as class rank, gender, and racial demographic. This information can help teachers and administrators to determine which students are at risk of falling behind their peers and which ones have the potential to catch up.
Using wide-format data like sgpData with the SGP package is, in general, straight forward. However, it is recommended that users consult the SGP analysis vignette for more comprehensive documentation on how to use sgpData and WIDE data formats for SGP analyses.
The sgpData dataset provides unique identifiers for each student as well as the grade level of the assessment they took in each year. It also includes the name of the test administrator as well as the year that the test was administered. The first column, ID, provides the student’s unique identifier. The following 5 columns, GRADE_2013, GRADE_2014, GRADE_2015, GRADE_2016, and GRADE_2017 provide the grade level of the student’s assessment score in each of those years.
sgpData is available to all districts in a format compatible with operational SGP analyses. Macomb and Clare-Gladwin ISDs have taken this a step further by adding the sgpData_INSTRUCTOR_NUMBER field which allows them to connect students with their instructors. This feature is an invaluable tool for districts who want to ensure that students with multiple instructors for one content area are assigned to the same instructor for each of their assessments. Other districts are planning to add this functionality in the future.
